Inclusive education must start with teacher training

“I am not prepared for this”, “they only learn to a certain extent”, “she has a problem”. These are some of the phrases, in reference to people with disabilities, heard by the teacher. Dr. Luciana Magalhães, Professor of the Professional Masters in Education at the University of Taubaté (UNITAU), years of experience in inclusive education. Considering information and training as the best tools against prejudice and on the way to inclusion, the teacher took to the students of the 6th semester of the Degree in Biology at UNITAU, last monday, 12 of September, the lecture “Meanings about disability: building inclusive practices in education”.

Licentiate is a type of higher education with an emphasis on teaching, that trains elementary and high school teachers, in subjects such as Biology. In addition to the technical skills of each subject, the teacher must be prepared to deal with the different situations that arise in the classroom and respect and include the diversity of students enrolled in schools.

The activity given by Prof.. Luciana proposed a reflection on the processes of school inclusion and encouraged students to take a new look at disability. “We see it in an assistentialist way, in a way that we do not understand the person as a whole, look first at the disability and then come to understand who this student is. We have a very stigmatizing look”, scores.

Graduation is the first step in the formation of a teacher and is fundamental in the development of this perspective.. “Here in the Biology course, oftentimes, we see a 'biologizing' look to think about disability, so it is very important to bring an approach thinking about the person with disabilities and inclusive practices, with a social look, historic, so that we can see this reality from other angles”, says the teacher.

The meaning of disability, as presented in the lecture, helps to clarify issues such as the unfolding of differences in school and social relationships, seeking transformation. “Activities of this type always help students to be able to, when faced with this reality, have a new way of understanding. it's a difference, like any other. Then, we need to bring this difference to our daily lives”, points to expert. “This transformation is a process”, complete.

The lecture was conceived by Prof.. Dr. Maria Cristina Vasques Prado Cunha, responsible for the discipline Pedagogical Practices in Cytology and Genetics of the Biological Sciences course and professor of the Professional Master's in Education. She explains that the purpose of the activity is not to present ready-made models of inclusive practices, but to encourage reflection and study by students so that they have this concern when planning and developing practical activities in schools.

Exercises like this will have repercussions on the performance of the future teacher. “When he is professional, will have greater security when entering the classroom and finding a student with a disability. Many are afraid, not knowing how to deal. when are you ready, but, study, has the experience of the internships and takes over a room in fact, has more security to deal with heterogeneity”, evaluates the teacher.

This new look at the planning of activities in schools impacted the way student Khadija da Mata sees students with disabilities. before graduation, she thought that, How teacher, could just “invent something for him to distract himself”. "Now, I realize that students with disabilities can learn, but in a specific way. It's a different learning, I'll have to have another plan to be able to teach, but they have the ability”, account.

The transformation felt by Khadija is the main objective of Profa. Luciana in the work in inclusive education and should happen during the training of professionals, what, in the future, will form other citizens. “School is the place for this reflection, this is where we come across all this diversity, not just for people with disabilities. Then, if we don't have this discussion at the university, preparing our professionals for this, or what people expect? We need to bring this debate”, ends.
